Custom Pre-Hung vs Off-The-Shelf Slab Doors: What’s the difference and why does it matter?
It’s a question you don’t typically think about until you’re looking at replacing a door or building a custom home. Do you choose a custom pre-hung door, or do you find a cheaper slab door and try to hang it yourself?
While there’s plenty of reasons to use both types of doors, we want to discuss what those differences are and why they matter:
The pre-hung door includes the door slab, frame, and hinges, making it a ready-to-install unit.
The door slab is just the door itself, without a frame, hinges, or hardware.
A Pre-Hung door has been built with a whole door and frame as one piece. It’s delivered from our shop as an entire unit that simply needs to be leveled, shimmed and secured into place. When it comes down to it, a Pre-Hung door is less work on-site and easier to install without issue.
A Slab Door is essentially just a door. The work to put in hinges, jambs, threshold and more still needs to happen. Plus, you still need to purchase those materials in addition to your Slab Door. They require more time on site for install and can cause delays when time is tight. While slab doors are perfect for door swaps that are the same dimensions, we don’t generally recommend them for anything outside of that scenario.
At Niagara Pre-Hung, bringing you the best quality and workmanship is something we take pride in. Ensuring that your door is built to exacting standards, and installed efficiently is important to us.
